KAPOTIVE Star Singers

KAPOTIVE Star Singers – Bukoba is a community-based public awareness and social mobilization initiative under Kagera Poverty Alleviation Initiatives (KAPOTIVE) that uses theatre arts—including music, dance, drama, and participatory performances—to deliver impactful development messages to communities.   The initiative was established to address the reality that many social and development challenges persist not only because of limited resources, but also due to limited awareness, harmful social norms, misinformation, and slow behavior change. KAPOTIVE Star Singers provides an effective and culturally appropriate communication channel that reaches communities in a language and style they understand best.   Through creative performances, community dialogues, and outreach campaigns, KAPOTIVE Star Singers transforms complex development issues into simple, relatable, and memorable messages that inspire reflection, encourage community participation, and promote positive change. The initiative is particularly effective in reaching diverse audiences including youth, women, children, parents, community leaders, and vulnerable groups across Bukoba and surrounding areas.   

2. Objectives The KAPOTIVE Star Singers initiative aims to:
  • Increase public awareness on priority social and development issues affecting communities in Bukoba and beyond.
  • Promote positive social behavior change through participatory theatre arts and culturally relevant communication methods.
  • Strengthen community participation and mobilization in development programs, campaigns, and public initiatives.
  • Support government and development partners in delivering key public messages effectively and inclusively.
  • Encourage youth engagement and talent development, using creative arts as a platform for leadership, advocacy, and community service.
  • Promote social inclusion and community unity by reaching marginalized groups with empowering and respectful messages.
  3. Approach KAPOTIVE Star Singers applies a community-centered and participatory Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) approach, ensuring that performances are not only entertaining but also educational and action-oriented. a.       Theatre for Development (TfD) Methodology The group uses Theatre for Development methods that combine entertainment with education, enabling communities to learn, reflect, and discuss real challenges affecting their daily lives. b.      Message Development Based on Community Needs Themes and scripts are developed based on:
  • community realities and priorities
  • stakeholder inputs (local leaders, institutions, program teams)
  • ongoing campaigns and development interventions
c.       Community Engagement and Dialogue Performances are designed to stimulate participation. After performances, facilitators engage communities through:
  • question-and-answer sessions
  • open dialogue and reflections
  • call-to-action discussions
d.      Partnerships and Coordination KAPOTIVE Star Singers works in collaboration with:
  • local government authorities
  • NGOs, CBOs and FBOs
  • Development actors and institutionsto ensure messages align with local priorities and ongoing interventions.
e.       Multimedia Documentation Performances and campaigns are documented through video and photography to support:
  • reporting
  • visibility
  • learning and replication
  • advocacy and resource mobilization
  4. Activities and Brief Description KAPOTIVE Star Singers delivers several awareness and outreach activities, including: 4.1 Community Sensitization and Mass Mobilization Campaigns The group conducts outreach events in communities, schools, public gatherings, and institutional events to sensitize the public on key development topics. These campaigns support community mobilization for participation in programs and adoption of positive practices.   4.2 Awareness Messaging Through Music, Dance, and Drama KAPOTIVE Star Singers develops and performs creative pieces that deliver messages in an engaging way. These performances help communities understand issues, change perceptions, and take action. Key formats include:
  • educational songs with development themes
  • drama skits based on real community challenges
  • dance performances linked with advocacy messages
  • role plays and interactive audience participation
  4.3 Thematic Outreach on Priority Social and Development Issues Depending on partner needs and community priorities, the initiative delivers messages on topics such as:
  • youth empowerment and entrepreneurship
  • gender equality and women empowerment
  • child protection and family responsibility
  • community health and hygiene practices
  • environmental protection and climate awareness
  • responsible citizenship and community unity
  • agriculture and livelihood improvement messages
